Regional Accomplishments

Upper Peninsula:



Before the end of her first year in office, Senator Stabenow had been to every UP county and has continued to be a champion of the UP. Her accomplishments include new radio communications equipment so our emergency responders can communicate with each other; new fire trucks and emergency equipment for local communities from DeTour to Ironwood; millions of dollars in resources for job creation initiatives at Michigan Tech Smart Zone and Northern Initiatives at NMU; expansion of the UP Medical Care Access Coalition serving the uninsured; dredging of harbors like Ontonagon to keep them open for commerce; expansion of health technology at Marquette General Hospital to improve patient care across the UP; wiring the UP for Internet access; local water and sewer upgrades in communities like Newberry and St Ignace; $2.7 million to keep 150 miles of critical snowmobile trails open for public use in the Western UP; and $475,000 to control the destructive Cormorant bird which is devastating the fishing industry from the Les Cheneaux Islands to Escanaba and across Michigan.


Northern Michigan:



Born in Gladwin and raised in Clare, Senator Stabenow has been a champion for the rural communities of Northern Michigan. Her accomplishments include a new emergency room for Mercy Hospital in Grayling; $475,000 to control the destructive Cormorant bird which is devastating the fishing industry across Northern Michigan; championing veterans’ health services in Alpena, Cadillac, Clare and Traverse City; providing disaster assistance and school lunch purchases for our Cherry growers; passing her bill to preserve our lighthouses and promote tourism; reimbursing our volunteer and part-time emergency responders for homeland security training; dredging harbors across Northern Michigan from Charlevoix to Leeland to Ludington to keep them open for recreational boating and commerce; restoring critical payments to farmers impacted by the spread of Bovine TB; millions in funding for the Cherry Capitol Airport to spur economic development; securing $1 million to fix the damaged Petoskey Breakwater Wall; renovating the Great Lakes Maritime Academy’s vessel, the State of Michigan; working with the Anglers of the Au Sable to preserve the beautiful and pristine Mason Tract area; enhancing exhibits at the Thunder Bay Underwater Marine Sanctuary; $200,000 for the Alpena Community College Rural Homeland Security Education and Training Center and has worked to ensure that the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center continues its vital role in our nation's defense and security; and securing the resources to ensure that Camp Grayling continues its vital role in our nation's defense and security.


West Michigan:



Senator Stabenow is no stranger to Western Michigan and has gotten real results for the region. Her accomplishments include millions of dollars in resources for job creation initiatives like The Right Place and health technology funding at Western Michigan University; federal prison industries reform in support of the region’s critical furniture industry; millions in transportation funding for projects like I-94 reconstruction to spur economic development in Kalamazoo and for The Rapid mass transit system; and harbor dredging funds in support of our coastal communities. Her leadership led to the creation of a new community health center to serve the uninsured in Muskegon; the restoration of funding for the Family Health Center of Battle Creek and the expansion of the Muskegon Community Health Project. As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, she has championed the needs of the regions fruit and vegetable producers, including disaster assistance and commodity purchases for asparagus, grape and apple growers. She worked closely with the rest of the Michigan Delegation in the "BRAC" base closure process to make sure that the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base continued its vital role in ensuring our nation's defense and security, saving thousands of jobs.


Mid Michigan:



Senator Stabenow has lived in the Lansing area her entire adult life and has gotten real results for local communities throughout Mid-Michigan. Her accomplishments include the expansion of Foote Hospital's emergency room; new roads, transit and airport funding to spur economic development, including the Alma Bus System, the MSU railroad underpass, the CATA bus system, and Capital City Airport; and a new post office in Westphalia. She has brought millions of dollars to spur innovation through projects like Jackson's Armory Arts Project, LCC's Alternative Fuel Initiative, and MSU's extensive agricultural research programs.


Genesee, The Thumb & Tri-Cities Region:



Senator Stabenow has gotten real results for Genesee and the Tri-county areas. Her accomplishments include new roads, transit, and airport funding, including a new Saginaw I-675 exit, the Washington and Genesee streetscape projects and the Flint Bishop Airport expansion. She was successful in bringing a new post office to Flint Township and obtaining funding for flood control in Saginaw County. Her leadership has led to greater investments in the arts for the Flint Institute of Arts, the Saginaw Art Museum and the Bay City State Theatre. She has brought millions of dollars to spur innovation at the Mott Technology Center for 21st Century job training and Kettering University for fuel cell research. She also strongly opposed CAFTA in support of the region's critical sugar industry.


Southeast Michigan:



Senator Stabenow has gotten real results for Southeast Michigan and local communities throughout the region. From delivering resources for northern border security, to addressing the challenges facing the auto industry and area businesses, she knows the unique challenges facing SE Michigan. Her efforts to attract world-class, high tech industries to the region have helped bring over $3.5 million in job creation initiatives like Automation Alley, Tech Town and Detroit Renaissance; secured millions of dollars for the region's colleges and universities in support of cutting edge research and investments in innovation; and aided Michigan's Delegation in the "BRAC" base closure process to make sure that Selfridge and TACOM continue their vital role in our nation's security, saving thousands of jobs in the process. Recognized by both the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and the Fire Chiefs as Legislator of the Year, Senator Stabenow secured funding for new radio communications equipment for Michigan's first responders. She led efforts to open four new health centers in SE Michigan, including the City of Detroit, to provide basic health care services to uninsured citizens; and worked on behalf of SE Michigan's hospitals to cut red tape and secure the resources and technology necessary to maintain the cutting-edge health care our citizens deserve. Striving to make our borders more secure, Senator Stabenow secured $100,000 for a new patrol boat for the Macomb County Sheriff's Department to patrol the international waters of Lake St Clair, and worked with the Detroit Regional Chamber border task force to bring new customs and security agents to the border, increasing security while maintaining the free flow of trade. Her leadership has helped protect SE Michigan's natural resources, including Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River and the Clinton River.
