Making a trade: Congress should pass currency manipulation bill

An interesting proposal is making its way through Congress — one that could make West Michigan products more competitive in the global marketplace.

The eighth largest exporter in the nation, Michigan sent overseas about $44 billion in goods and services in 2010, a 37 percent increase over 2009. Agricultural exports, many in West Michigan, have increased by 50 percent since 2004.

New trade often translates to more jobs. So it's important that Michigan firms compete on a level playing field in the international market. Unfortunately, when Michigan companies export goods, they often are competing against governments as well as foreign companies.

We agree with Stabenow, “enough is enough.” What China — and other countries — is doing is illegal, it's time it stopped.
